Defying expectations, pop sensation Taylor Swift has successfully transitioned into the film industry with her concert film The Eras Tour. This marked a significant milestone in her career as unlike her previous concert films, it was given a theatrical run. Yet, amid her multifaceted talents, there’s one role she’s yet to don: directing a feature film. Her recent work on All Too Well: The Short Film further highlights her potential for direction.
In late 2022, it was announced that Swift would be writing and directing her first full-length movie with Searchlight Pictures. Fans are eagerly awaiting updates on this project, hoping that after the release of her next album, The Tortured Poets Department, on Friday (April 19), and the conclusion of The Eras Tour on December 8, she will commence production on this untitled film.
To recall, Swift began her directorial journey in 2010 by co-directing the music video for Mine from her third studio album Speak Now. She later took on solo directorial projects, starting with the music video for ME! from her seventh studio album Lover. Since then, Swift has directed most of her music videos and the 2020 Disney+ concert documentary Folklore: The Long Pond Sessions.
Swift’s directorial prowess was showcased in All Too Well: The Short Film in 2021, which won a Grammy for Best Music Video. Meanwhile, her concert film, The Eras Tour, grossed $261.7M worldwide during its three-month theatrical run, becoming the highest-grossing concert film of all time. It also set other box office records and was nominated for the inaugural Golden Globe for Best Box Office Achievement.
The success of The Eras Tour movie continued with an extended cut, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version), released on Disney+ on March 14. Notably, it set a new Disney+ streaming record and became the platform’s most-streamed concert film with 4.6M views and 16.2M hours viewed during its opening weekend. These figures suggest that Swift has the star power to draw audiences to her feature directorial debut.
