Taylor Swift regularly claims several spaces on many Billboard songs charts. She sometimes even replaces herself atop various rankings or watches as one current single rises higher than a descending older cut. Being one of the top performers on the weekly tallies means there will be plenty of interesting and sometimes even unusual moves between her tunes–but what she’s managed this week on one roster is truly strange.
On the Adult Contemporary chart, Swift trades one song for another. She does so down to the exact position—and with a pair of unlikely wins on the ranking of the top-performing tracks on adult contemporary radio across the U.S.
This frame, Swift’s “Bad Blood (Taylor’s Version)” returns to the Adult Contemporary chart at No. 29. It reappears at its peak on the 30-rung tally, and it has now lived on the tally for six total non-consecutive frames.
Last week, the singer sat in the same position, and with a related track. “Style (Taylor’s Version)” appeared at No. 29 on the Adult Contemporary chart last time around. This period, it’s nowhere to be found.
Both “Style (Taylor’s Version)” and “Bad Blood (Taylor’s Version)” were featured on Swift’s latest album 1989 (Taylor’s Version). The project was released in October, and since then, a number of tracks present on the title have become hits on a variety of Billboard charts, especially the one or two that were spun off as proper singles.
That doesn’t appear to be the case with either “Style (Taylor’s Version)” or “Bad Blood (Taylor’s Version).” It seems that the two cuts have been rising and falling onto and off of the Adult Contemporary chart without proper promotion. Perhaps there has been some pushing from her team, or maybe stations simply want more Swift. These two tunes have found space on this list before, but they’ve not been turned into massive radio smashes across the country.
Either way, Swift’s back-and-forth is unusual, because both songs have already spent time on the Adult Contemporary chart, but they are only barely cracking the tally each time they land on it. They have debuted and fallen away at least once, if not several times. And the fact that Swift claimed the same numbered position two weeks running with different tracks is certainly unusual.
