Margiela’s cultural chokehold continues with Cardi B’s new single cover – Dazed

It’s been just over six weeks since Maison Margiela’s SS24 Artisanal collection debuted in Paris, but our collective fixation with the show isn’t letting up any time soon. If you need more proof, head over to your Instagram feed and take a look at Cardi B’s most recent post. The Bronx rapper dropped the cover art for her hotly-anticipated new single “Enough (Miami)” last night, and the make-up look is a dead ringer for John Galliano’s twisted marionettes. Pencil-thin brows? Check. Rose-flushed cheeks? Yep. Plump, glossy lips and a porcelain sheen? You got it.
The OG look was famously concocted by Pat McGrath and proceeded to take the world by storm, birthing thousands of TikTok tutorials that are still cropping up daily. But though Cardi’s long-time make-up artist Erika La’Pearl was responsible for the “Enough (Miami)” cover look, she’s very clearly been studying at the school of Dame Pat, and the results are there to see.
Cardi mining the recent Margiela show for inspo is, of course, no surprise. Her fashion girl status is well documented, delivering countless looks in all her music videos. Take the video for her recent single “Like What (Freestyle)” where she strapped into a pair of pink fuzzy pelvis-skimming Rick Owens Kiss heels; or her Pucci bodysuit and matching wallpaper for “Bongos”; or that transparent breastplate by Esmay Wagemans, sculpted to her body in the “Up” music video. Naysayers be damned: when it comes to fashion, Cardi delivers, and if this Margiela moment is anything to go by, we’re expecting the same from “Enough (Miami)”.
Outside of the CBCU (Cardi B Cinematic Universe), the Margiela collection continues to permeate pop culture with a trilogy of red carpet moments. First up was Hunter Schafer, whose stylist Dara Allen nabbed the first IRL pull, putting the actor in a fringed skirt and ashen cardi for Cuckoo’s Berlinale premiere. Then came Anya Taylor-Joy at the Dune: Part 2 premiere, in gold lamé and corseted to the gods, and then there was Kendall Jenner at the Vanity Fair Oscars after party, in slinky black lace and her own teeny-tiny corset. Here’s hoping that Cardi enters the chat when the video drops on Friday and shows the girls how it’s really done.
