Cardi B defends Offset's homophobic lyrics, likens it to the time she used the word “tranny” – Queerty

Cardi B is standing by her fiancee Offset after he received backlash for the antigay lyrics in his song Boss Life.
Just to recap: Offset, who belongs to the hip hop group Migos, raps in the song, “I cannot vibe with queers.” After being called out for being homophobic, the 26-year-old hip hop artist issued an apology of sorts, saying the word “queer,” to him, means “odd” or “strange” and that he wasn’t talking about LGBTQ people. He went on to say “I’m offended I offended anybody.”

Not surprisingly, the apology didn’t go over so well. Now, Offset’s fiancee, Cardi B, the 25-year-old reigning queen of hip hop who currently holds the record for being the only woman to have five Top 10 singles simultaneously on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, is stepping in to set the record straight.

Or maybe make it worse?
You decide.
In a Twitter live video, Cardi claims Offset didn’t know the term “queer” was a derogatory word for gay people. Rather than calling him homophobic, she’s asking that people educate Offset.
“What is the point of you trying to argue and not educate?” she says.

She likens the whole thing to a similar controversy she experienced a few years ago when she was blasted for using the word “tranny.”
“I didn’t know that that was a world that you cannot use,” Cardi says. “Especially since my trans friends use it.”

Watch.

I really don’t believe that he didn’t know what “queer” means — especially in the context in which he used the word.
That being said, I think we should move on. It’s time our community focuses on bigger issues as nit-picking lyrics, books and movies like this feeds into the right wing narrative that we are all these secret authoritarian Marxists who want to control you. It’s fine to point this out on Twitter for a day or two to make this guy notice but that’s it. If he were calling for all gays to be beaten or killed–that would be different.
Gays are great at multitasking. We can carry a protest sign and do makeup with the other hand.
Why are you concerned with what Heteros think of us?
You don’t know what goes through someones mind, many heterosexual politicians call us “It”. in private and are in the process of stripping gays Of the few Civil rights we have.
He knew exactly what he was doing because it’s made news not just here on queerty..he could have omitted the word but then nobody would be talking about it. He got publicity.. it worked.I never heard of either of these 2 BTW until this story ..there are much worse words ..she can spin it anyway she wants ..deliberate..OK ..next
*grammar !
I agree with @barkomatic. Also, she is right about the offensive term she used towards trans people. As far as I know, once Cardi B was educated about it she hasn’t used it, publicly at least, again. Also, I though she did call out her (now ex-?) fiance about his comment because she has a strong gay fan base, and has openly stated that she is bi and her sister is a lesbian.
@Terrycloth, her song “Bodak Yellow” was one of the top charting songs of last summer.
BTW, will Queerty report on the white Atlanta gay bar owner who has been posting racist invective on FB for several years now? Probably not.
I like her. I like him. he dresses very gay too. I’m black and gay. Hey I’m queer too. If someone doesn’t want to associate with me that’s cool. It’s their homophobic scared issues. Not mine. Maybe someone doesn’t want to associate with him because they might say he looks like a black ant….lol. Don’t matter their lost. Next. Moving on.
How many identities do you have?
Cardi B is a C U Next Tuesday.
One. Y do you ask?
How may identities do you have?
Straight people are sickening most the time nowadays anyway and throaty for attention and it’s all about me me me…..yuck and very annoying so gays shouldn’t really care if the don’t want to be bothered with us vice Versa we don’t want to be bothered with them….hello.
She gets a pass cause she’s current and relevant…….hahahahahahaha. Sorry. Who’s this girl?
It you don’t know who cardi b is you are certainly not relevant. I can’t even buy groceries without hearing her somewhere during the process…..and I buy my groceries online! Haha
She so wright. My parents never taught me not to say Nigar. Let’s educate each other. It’s a new millennium and who knew a decade ago that these words were wrong? Yawn.
Nigar? Yawn.
In this day and age, anyone in any of the arts, regardless of where they come from knows what the word queer means. I don’t believe the “that’s not what I meant” excuse at all.
Black women in the age range 15 to 30 tend to be highly homophobic. Because it’s the age range where women market themselves to men, they see male homosexual desire as a threat to their marketing.
