It may be the middle of summer but some of us look forward to Christmas all year ’round. Yesterday, the trailer for Last Christmas was released and it features Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke and Crazy Rich Asians lead Henry Golding. Other celebrities on the call sheet include Emma Thompson and Michelle Yeoh.
The romantic comedy follows Emilia Clarke’s character Kate who works at a seasonal Christmas pop-up shop in London as an elf. She befriends a character named Tom, played by Henry Golding, in a series of classic rom-com meet-cutes. In the trailer, Kate opens up about her near-death experience and her aspirations to become a singer as her romantic relationship with Tom begins to grow. Watch the trailer above to see for yourself.
According to an article in BBC News, the movie is themed around the music of late singer-songwriter George Michael, as the musician is Kate’s hero. George Michael tragically passed away on Christmas Day before he could finish his last album, and one of his unreleased tracks will be featured in the film. Paul Feig, the director of Last Christmas said:
“It’s just an absolutely amazing song that I’m so excited the world is going to get to hear now. It’s a very celebratory song, I would dare say. And we were able to play the entire song, which is almost six minutes long, in the film. It’s not a musical, but George’s music affects the story. There are a couple of sections where the actors are actually interacting with the music and other sections where George’s music is driving, or underscoring the story. So it’s a nice mix of being neither a jukebox movie nor straight-up musical.”
