Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” has been a flashpoint of discussion ever since it dropped, with conservative pundits and politicians going on a bizarre campaign against the song’s raunchy lyrics. In a recent interview with Apple Music, Cardi reflected on the criticism she receives for her lyrics. She also called out fans who denigrate female rappers for being sexual, but don’t support ones who rap about “woke” topics.
“People be lying,” Cardi said when discussing the topic of sexually explicit rap lyrics. “People will be saying don’t like hoes and they don’t like that p-ssy talk. People love it.”
Cardi is sometimes compared negatively to rappers like Noname or Rapsody, who are known for addressing political issues and community concerns in their music. However, the Bronx MC dismissed the comparison altogether, saying the people who claim they want to hear about “woke” topics don’t support these rappers, either.
“A lot of female rappers, they be talking about, the community and the unity and they’re very woke. And it’s just, there are really good rappers, but you all don’t be streaming them,” she said. “And then you all be complaining because you all want us to rap about those types of stuff. And it’s okay, but there is a rapper for that. There’s different rappers that rap about those things that you all want to hear. There are conscious rappers. But you all not going to them. So you can’t be mad. You can’t be mad because you fake like talking about p-ssy.”
Cardi’s “WAP” has drawn uninformed criticism from conservative pundits for its lyrics about that exact topic, with Cardi rapping:
This isn’t the first time Cardi has addressed the issue of conscious female rappers not receiving the support she thinks they deserve. She previously name-checked rappers like Rapsody, CHIKA, and Tierra Whack while lamenting the fact that women are pitted against one another in hip-hop. Rapsody herself said that Cardi’s music does count as conscious rap because it’s true to her own life.
“A lot of times, people will use me as the… ‘You should like Rapsody because she don’t dress half-naked’ or ‘You should like Rapsody because she shows how a woman is supposed to be shown,’ and it’s like, bro, you don’t even have to do all that,” Rapsody told Talib Kweli. “If you like me, then like me, but don’t come at these other women because they choose to do their art the way they do their art… Cardi B makes conscious music [because] that’s conscious to what she was doing.”
“WAP” appears set to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart next week. It will mark Cardi’s fourth chart-topping single.
