Lady Gaga becomes Harley Quinn in gripping Joker: Folie à Deux fan trailer, showing her Elsworlds DC character descending into madness.
A tense Joker: Folie à Deux fan trailer spotlights Lady Gaga's transformation into Harley Quinn. Joker: Folie à Deux's cast will once again be led by the Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime, with the DC sequel seeing Gaga join the franchise as none other than Harley Quinn. While Margot Robbie played the character in the DCEU and is expected to continue doing so in the new DC Universe, Joker: Folie à Deux is one of DC's Elseworlds movies, allowing Gaga's Harley Quinn to thrive.
Screen Culture shared a look at what Gaga's performance as Harley Quinn could entail through a nerve-wracking Joker: Folie à Deux fan trailer.
The DC fan trailer shows Gaga as both the Harleen Quinzel and Harley Quinn sides of the character, slowly descending into madness as the footage moves along. While the trailer is exciting, its thriller tone might be more similar to Joker than what appears to be planned for the sequel.
Phoenix racked up awards for his magnetic performance in 2019's Joker, including a Best Actor Oscar win. While that should be enough to cement how important his return as the Clown Prince of Crime is, there is a chance that Joker: Folie à Deux will be more about Gaga's Harley Quinn than Arthur Fleck. Starting with the sequel's name, Harley's impact on the story can already be felt.
Joker ended with Arthur having fully transitioned from a man who felt society let him down to the villain known as the Joker. With a major part of Arthur's arc complete, Joker: Folie à Deux might bring him along for the ride that will be Gaga's Harleen Quinzel discovering her inner Harley Quinn. From the Joker: Folie à Deux Harley Quinn set photos and videos that have been revealed, Gaga seems to be trailing the same path in the sequel that Phoenix did in Joker.
Most importantly, Joker: Folie à Deux will be a musical. As Gaga is not only a fantastic actress, but also one of the best singers in the world, it would make sense for the DC movie to focus more on her Harley Quinn than on Phoenix's Joker. The original Joker had many plot twists, and the sequel is already breaking expectations by going with its musical direction, which means that Joker: Folie à Deux surprising the audience by putting Harley Quinn's story first would be in line with how the franchise acts.
