Lady Gaga’s Stirring Live Performance at the 2023 Oscars
In 2019, Lady Gaga secured an Oscar for her song “Shallow” from the soundtrack of the blockbuster film “A Star Is Born,” in which she starred alongside Bradley Cooper. This year, she delivered a live performance that captivated audiences.
On March 12, 2023, Lady Gaga was nominated for an Oscar for her song “Hold My Hand,” featured in the film “Top Gun: Maverick” starring Tom Cruise. While she did not take home a statuette at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, she won over hearts with her stripped-down live performance.
Dressed in a t-shirt, ripped jeans, and Converse sneakers, the star of the upcoming “Joker” sequel showcased her powerful voice, emphasizing the poignant lyrics of the song. The personal track speaks of becoming one’s own hero, even when feeling broken inside.
Appearing without makeup, Lady Gaga displayed a different side of her persona, contrasting with her usual extravagant style. Earlier in the evening, she graced the Oscars red carpet in a glamorous Versace gown, this time in a champagne hue. The singer also made headlines for coming to the aid of a photographer who had a mishap, further endearing herself to fans.
Lady Gaga, the other star of “Top Gun: Maverick” with her song “Hold My Hand”
“Top Gun: Maverick,” the follow-up to the 1986 cult classic, premiered out of competition at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and wowed audiences upon its release last year. The film featuring Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, and Jon Hamm charmed viewers with its lively action sequences and nostalgic nods to the original “Top Gun.” Lady Gaga’s performance of the film’s soundtrack hit, “Hold My Hand,” significantly contributed to its success.
In a statement in 2022, Lady Gaga revealed, “When I wrote this song for ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ I didn’t realize the multiple layers it covered in the heart of the film, in my own psyche, and in the nature of the world we live in. I worked on it for years, perfecting it.” The singer, who shared that the song was written as a gesture of support for those going through dark times, aimed to create a song where people could share their deep need to be understood and to try to understand others.
Thirty-six years after “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin in 1986 from the original “Top Gun,” Lady Gaga established her song as an equally iconic anthem. With her live rendition at the 2023 Oscars, she elevated the emotional impact of the track, akin to the legendary planes piloted by Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
“Hold My Hand” by Lady Gaga, released in 2022, is available now. Her upcoming album set to debut in 2024..
