Mark Ronson reveals the original Lady Gaga song Bradley Cooper had in mind for A Star Is Born.
A Star Is Born without Shallow may be hard to imagine now, but the acclaimed movie almost featured a completely different Lady Gaga hit song, according to musical producer Mark Ronson.
After having two small participations in Machete Kills and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Lady Gaga got her big break at cinema in A Star Is Born, the directional debut of actor Bradley Cooper, who also co-wrote and produced the movie. Although it was already the fourth time the story have been adapted to the big screen, it ended up being a huge success, mainly because of the amazing chemistry between the two protagonists, but also because of its music.
Shallow, the main song from the movie, became an instant hit. But it could have been another Lady Gaga song the one conquering moviegoers. In an interview with NME, musical producer Mark Ronson revealed that Bradley Cooper wanted another song from the singer to be featured on his movie:
"We were working on Gaga’s album Joanne and Bradley Cooper stopped by the studio one afternoon. I like his films. He showed up looking like a movie star. So we hung out. He was really sweet, talking about this new script that they were both doing. I played him the song called 'Joanne' and he’s like, 'That’s great, can I have it?' I know he’s a big star and everything, but I really liked that song. And I kind of needed it for Gaga’s record. [I agreed to take some time to work on a new song.] We were working in this incredible studio in Malibu, [Los Angeles] – Rick Rubin’s studio, Shangri La – and it had this really long echoey hallway. I have this very distinct memory of Gaga’s voice coming from 30 feet away, sounding so excited about something as she came in. She sat down at the piano and started singing 'I’m off the deep end…'"
Although Joanne is a beautiful song, there's no doubt that Shallow was the right choice.
Besides participating in A Star Is Born, Gaga has already demonstrate her acting skills in other interesting projects. She joined the cast of Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story in Hotel and Roanoke, and then she was cast as Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci from Ridley Scott. And now she's about to give another big step in her career as an actress by joining the world of superheroes.
Lady Gaga will be joining Academy Award-winner Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips in Joker: Folie à Deux, sequel to the 2019 film that told the story behind the infamous villain from Gotham City. This new movie is set to work as an origin story for Harley Quinn, who has always been the Joker's love interest.
The film, which is going to be a musical, will show the audience how Harley and Arthur Fleck meet, how they end up being together and becoming partners in crime after sharing some time in Arkham Asylum.
Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theaters on October 4, 2024.
