Why Is the NFL So Scared of Cardi B's Hilariously Racy Super Bowl Ad? – The Root

If you’re a woman who watches a lot of sports, you know you’re constantly inundated with commercials for male hormone products and erectile dysfunction medication. It’s just one of the things you learn to live with. Seriously, I could live a very happy life if I never have to hear former MLB player Frank Thomas talking about how “she’ll like it too.” Apparently, the NFL thinks those jokes are only funny when men make them. If Cardi B has something hilarious to say about a certain male body part, it’s not appropriate for Super Bowl Sunday.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a big chunk of Cardi’s NYX Cosmetics ad for its new Duck Plump lip gloss was deemed too racy for the big game. The gloss “promises to make lips appear fuller and plumper.” However, some men get their signals crossed and start using the Duck Plump on other body parts.
After the usual beauty ad shots of the “Bongos” rapper and backup dancers applying the gloss against a colorful background, the clip suddenly shifts to a mock breaking news story, where a reporter details how men are receiving treatment for misusing the lip gloss.
“And we’re live, wondering why men put Duck Plump where it should not go,” the reporter says.
Men are seen being rescued by various exhausted female first responders, with a pharmacist explaining, “Duck Pump makes your lips bigger. Nothing else.”
Even Cardi gets in on the nonsense, with the ad cutting back to her sitting on a giant NYX throne, saying, “They put it where? Why?!”
Come on NFL, that’s hilarious! I get that it’s pushing the line for your global family-friendly event. But you’ve shown in the past that you’re totally fine with jokes about the male sex drive, so why is this commercial different?
Is it cutting too close to home for your audience? Or is it because it’s women who are poking fun at the male obsession with being bigger in certain areas?
Let’s be honest: The first half of the actual game was not exciting. Things didn’t get moving until Usher showed up. Showing this ad in its entirety would’ve given your big game some much needed buzz.
Lighten up NFL. It’s just lip gloss.
