Fans wonder if Joker 2 will be a musical and if Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn will sing in Folie a Deux. Here is all you need to know.
Joker 2 will reportedly not be a musical according to the film’s cinematographer, Lawrence Sher.
In a recent interview with Joker Folie News (video posted on X by ScreenTime), Lawrence Sher, the cinematographer for both 2019’s Joker and the upcoming Joker 2, claimed that the film is not a musical saying:
“It’s not a musical per se, it just has music in it. The music is part of the film and the characters, but I don’t know if it’s a musical.”

The rumors of Joker 2 being a musical first surfaced online in April 2023, when a now-deleted set video showed filming outside a large tent, Lady Gaga was not shown in the video but could be heard singing the song “We’re a Couple of Swells”, a comedy song performed by Judy Garland and Fred Astaire in the 1948 film Easter Parade.
The rumors continued to grow after a comment from Joker: Folie a Deux music composer Hildur Guðnadóttir in an interview with Comicbook.com where she teased that “there is going to be a lot of music” in the film.
This comment from Guðnadóttir in her interview happened around the same time Variety reported on Joker 2 featuring complicated musical sequences and compared the film to A Star Is Born, which also starred Lady Gaga.
Lady Gaga will sing as Harley Quinn in Joker 2 as songs will be in the film.
However, she will very likely only sing in scripted moments of the film where music is involved, as suggested by cinematographer Lawrence Sher.
