At only 22 years old, Billie Eilish is already one of the most celebrated and decorated musicians of her generation. As she continues to produce great work that critics and the entertainment industry want to reward, she is beginning to catch up to superstars who came before her, and soon she may match one of the most successful pop singers of the past several decades.
Eilish is currently nominated for six awards at the 2024 Grammys. Five of those nods are for her single “What Was I Made For?,” which was created for the movie Barbie. The track—which also just picked up an Academy Award nod—could easily pick up several prizes, and she may make history with at least one of them.
“What Was I Made For?” is in the running for the Best Song Written for Visual Media Grammy, which honors tracks that were crafted specifically for a TV show or film. Eilish is already a frontrunner for the honor, as her tune is considered one of the best of the year of any kind. It’s also up for some much bigger trophies–like Song of the Year and Record of the Year–so it stands a great shot at claiming this category.
If “What Was I Made For?” is named the Best Song Written for Visual Media, it will mark Eilish’s second time winning this specific Grammy. With a second trophy, she’ll tie Lady Gaga for the most wins in this field among women.
Eilish first won the Best Song Written for Visual Media Grammy just a few years ago in 2021. She and her brother Finneas–who is also nominated alongside his sibling this time around as well–collected the honor for the track “No Time to Die” from the James Bond movie of the same name.
Just before Eilish earned her first Grammy in the Best Song Written for Visual Media category, Gaga became the first woman to win the statue twice. She scored her pair of prizes in back-to-back ceremonies with different cuts from the movie A Star Is Born. The first time around, she and her collaborators won for “Shallow.” The following year, Gaga and a different group of songwriters took it home for the single “I’ll Never Love Again.”
With a second Grammy in this category, Eilish will tie more than just Gaga. She’ll also match fellow songwriters Howard Ashman, T-Bone Burnett, James Horner, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who won last year for “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” Alan Menken leads all artists, with five of these trophies, and Randy Newman ranks in second, with a trio of wins.
The winners of the 2024 Grammys will be announced during a live telecast on CBS on February 4, 2024.
