Taylor Swift is currently tied for the most Album of the Year wins at the Grammys, but she may break that record in just a few days. The singer is not just nominated for the top prize at the upcoming ceremony, she’s a likely champion once again. The “Cruel Summer” doesn’t have it in the bag just yet, though, as has been the case in a few instances in the past, but she does appear to be a very likely winner once again.
The Nominees

Who Will Win

Who Should Win

Swift is the likely winner this time around, but should she be? The singer has already won this honor three times in the past, for Fearless, 1989, and Folklore. Midnights was a massive commercial success, and critically applauded, but does it live up to the creative legacies of those aforementioned champions?
If Swift is named the winner of the Album of the Year, she’ll become the first musician to claim the honor four times. She’ll best the previously-set record, which is still also held by Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon. Swift has earned her spot among the greatest of all time, but should she pass those stars with Midnights?
Meanwhile, there are other musicians who are also worthy of the honor–and they’re all women. SZA’s SOS was likewise a huge win on the charts, and after waiting many years for her to follow up her critically-adored debut Ctrl, it was wonderful to see that the R&B powerhouse is only getting better with time.
All-female alternative rock outfit Boygenius would be an out-of-left-field winner, but they shouldn’t be counted out. The trio has a lot going for them, and it would mark the first time in years that women in rock led in this way. If The Record is named the Album of the Year, it would leave viewers at home scratching their heads, as it wasn’t nearly as successful as either Midnights or SOS, but that hasn’t stopped the Grammys in the past–just look at Jon Batiste’s recent win for We Are.
