Female rappers are more and more numerous, and prominent, in the music industry nowadays.
Cardi B is just one example of that, as her career seems to be blossoming following the success of her single Bodak Yellow.
However, her rise to fame is hardly a traditional one, and she’s now made headlines by announcing she’s pregnant with her famous rapper boyfriend.
Here’s what we know about Cardi B, who will perform at Coachella 2018 this weekend…
Cardi B is a 25-year-old rapper who found fame through discussing her life as a stripper online, and becoming an Instagram celebrity.
She was born Belcalis Almanzar in The Bronx to a Dominican father and Trinidadian mother.
By 16, she was part of a gang, later joining the Bloods, a notorious street gang and rival of the Crips.
She worked in a supermarket before becoming a stripper at 19, at the advice of her previous boss and in order to escape an abusive relationship and poverty.
After dropping out of college, Cardi B started to produce online content that went viral a few times in 2013 via Vine and Instagram.
She In 2015 joined the cast of the VH1 reality television series Love & Hip Hop: New York in 2015 and started to appear as a guest on various other shows.
By that same year, she was working on her first tracks, magazine shoots and music videos, after featuring on a remix of Shaggy’s single Boom Boom.
The 5ft5in New Yorker landed a contract with Atlantic Records in February 2017 and her single Bodak Yellow went to number one in the States.
Cardi’s stage name comes from the drink brand Bacardi, because she was nicknamed this from a young age, and she says that the B stands for whatever she feels like day by day.

Cardi, who is known for giving herself DIY butt injections, has branded herself as a feminist and one of her most popular videos saw her state: ‘I’m a hoe. I’m a stripper hoe. I’m about this shmoney.’
Since early 2017 the Christian performer has been with fellow rapper Offset, who then proposed to her in October of that year.
It was announced in April 2018 that Cardi was pregnant with Offset’s baby but she still plans to perform at Coachella.
Her predicted due date is Monday, July 30, 2018.
In 2018, she is estimated to be worth £2.8m.
