Taylor Swift fans have descended on London’s Wembley Way ahead of the pop star taking to the stage on Friday night for her first date at Wembley Stadium as part of her Eras Tour
Taylor Swift fever has come to London as the pop star kicked off the London leg of her tour on Friday night.
Thousands of excited fans have gathered in the capital, swapping friendship bracelets before the gig. Her hit Shake It Off was played at the traditional Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace to the unexpected delight of Swifties. A special edition Tube map was created to mark her arrival – with the Central Line renamed Red after the singer's fourth album, while the Victoria Line became 1989, the Bakerloo Line Evermore and the Northern Line her latest release, The Tortured Poets Department.
The US star, 34, will perform three gigs at Wembley Stadium – before returning to the venue in August for a further five dates. The sold-out shows will be attended by a total of nearly 640,000 people. Her Eras tour will boost the London economy by £300million, it’s reported.
She started her UK tour in Edinburgh this month before delighting fans in Liverpool and Cardiff. Her boyfriend Travis Kelce, 34, is expected to support his love interest at her London gigs after his appearance at the Cannes Lion Festival. Some Taylor fans even dressed up as her beau, wearing his Kansas City Chiefs red number 83 jersey.
Many fans got down to Wembley Way early to secure their spot and meet other Swifties. Fans have spent plenty of time carefully crafting their friendship bracelets ahead of each show. Once they arrive at the stadium, they hopefully begin swapping them to create lasting memories.
The capacity at Wembley is a whopping 90,000 which means it's one of the biggest venues on the Eras Tour. Taylor is thought to have resided in London for a short period of time while she dated her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn. Taylor dated the British actor for six years, with their split coming to light in April 2023.
It is believed that Taylor’s song, So Long, London, which is track five on The Tortured Poets Department, is about her ex-boyfriend and the end of their relationship. But all is not lost, because Taylor is now happily loved up with American football player Travis Kelce, whom she has been dating since the summer of 2023 after he attended one of her shows in July.
It is thought that Travis and the Kelce family will attend the Eras Tour shows in London, with fans speculating that they will all show up for the hitmaker as she takes the capital city by storm at the huge stadium. Fans have even been showing their love for Travis, with many rocking up to the show dressed as the American football player.
They have been spotted donning his Kansas City Chiefs gear with his number 87. One dad even rocked a t-shirt that showed he really had an understanding of Taylor's music and lyrics. "It's me. Hi. I'm the dad. It's me," read the top, referencing the pop star's song Anti Hero which dominated the charts last year.
Mollie Lycett travelled from Staffordshire for tonight’s concert. She told MyLondon she’s seen Taylor three times before and added: "We started queuing at 6.30am with no issues at all, all the staff are so helpful and keep checking on us. First people were here at 1.30am I think! I’m honestly so overwhelmingly excited to see her again it’s been six years since I last saw her because of the pandemic so this is extra special. It means everything because I’ve been a fan since I was 15 and I’m 31 now she’s a big part of my life.”
Ahead of her taking to the London stage, even the royals appeared to get in on the excitement. During Buckingham Palace's changing of the guard, Shake It Off was played. The soldiers, of course, kept their traditional stone-cold straight face as they focused on protecting their country and the royalty. However, Swifties that happened to be nearby were certainly in for a memorable treat. The guards played an instrumental version of the song.
