Taylor Swift Recalls Telling Dad Scott 'But Daddy, I Love Him' in Resurfaced 2008 Interview – Entertainment Tonight

Years before writing The Tortured Poets Department breakout track “But Daddy I Love Him,” a teenage Taylor Swift actually screamed those words to her father.
In a resurfaced 2008 interview with PopSugar, Swift recalled having an argument with her dad, Scott, when he didn’t approve of who she was dating.
“This song, I wrote it right after my one epic teenage tantrum that I ever threw in my whole life,” she said at the time while sharing the inspiration behind “Love Story” from her second album, Fearless.
“And I remember screaming something like ‘But daddy, I love him!’ and running out and storming into my room and slamming the door and then I sat down on the floor and wrote this song,” she continued.
Nearly 16 years later, the now 34-year-old singer released TTPD with “But Daddy I Love Him” as the sixth track.
In the more than five-and-a-half-minute long song, Swift sings, “Now I’m running with my dress unbuttoned / Screaming ‘But Daddy I love him!’ / I’m having his baby / No, I’m not, but you should see your faces.”
After the song was released, fans speculated who the mystery man could be, with many believing it was about her fling with Matty Healy. But, around the time of the interview in 2008, Swift briefly dated Joe Jonas.
Swifties are convinced that Swift at least refers to her current relationship with Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce toward the end of the song when she sings, “Now I’m dancing in my dress in the sun and / Even my daddy just loves him / I’m his lady, and oh my God / You should see your faces.”
This is because the couple’s family seem to approve of their relationship, which began in the late summer of 2023, shortly before Swift made her debut at a Chiefs game in September. A source recently told ET that the couple is excited about their future together, even anticipating an engagement soon.
“Taylor and Travis are doing amazing, and their loved ones see an engagement coming sooner than later,” the source said. “They make a great match and there’s no question about that.”
Swift appeared to confirm the fan speculation during her Eras Tour stop in Paris in May as she transitioned from “But Daddy I Love Him” into “So High School,” which is also presumed to be about Kelce.
Just a few days ago, Swift sang another song that she wrote as a teenager which now relates to her current love life years later — “Fifteen.”
Swift blushed as she sang about her love interest “on the football team.”
“In your life, you’ll do things / Greater than dating the boy on the football team / I didn’t know it at fifteen,” she sang.
