Based on a movie by the same name ‘Moulin Rouge!’ opened on Broadway this past July to great reviews.
The newly released soundtrack of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” ignites the excitement of a classic love story told through ageless pop songs set in 1899 Paris, France.
“Moulin Rouge” was first conceptualized as a movie back in 2001. Recently, the Broadway adaptation made a few adjustments to the lineup; from adding Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” to “Elephant Love Medley,” and sprinkling Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” into female protagonist, Satine’s, introduction number, “The Sparkling Diamond.” However, many plot progressing greats from the movie still remain, from Elton John’s “Your Song” to the heart wrenching “El Tango De Roxanne.”
In retaining some of the movie’s original masterpieces, the musical introduced new songs, many of which were released within the past ten years. Most notably is Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Britney Spears “Toxic,” tied together with the guitar riff of “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes; combining three of the biggest songs of the 2000’s.
This style of mashing up songs is consistent throughout the show even if it is just the subtle melody of “Right Round” playing behind “Lady Marmalade.” This adds a hidden piece of recognizable music every time you listen to it. What sets “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” soundtrack apart from other Jukebox musicals (a musical that contains popular songs) is that the music is not centered around one artist, or genre. In genre bending the majority of their songs, it allows for a modern Broadway feel, while still orchestrating gorgeous ballads, energetic dance numbers, and the telling of a love story.
