Taylor Swift continues to dominate the Billboard 200 this week with her latest release, The Tortured Poets Department. The album recently scored a monumental launch on the ranking of the most-consumed full-lengths in the U.S., securing the second-largest debut of all time. Given its impressive start, it’s no surprise that the album maintains its hold on the top spot for more than a single stint.
In its second week on the chart, The Tortured Poets Department faced little competition for the No. 1 position. It maintains its stronghold with a remarkable performance, marking the biggest second week for an album in nearly a decade.
Swift’s album manages to shift another 439,000 equivalent units in its second full tracking week, according to Billboard. That sum marks the most impressive second week for any album since 2015.
Back in December 2015, Adele’s 25 experienced a much more significant second-week performance, moving 1.162 million equivalent units. Since then, the title has held the record for the greatest second-week performance of any album.
The Tortured Poets Department debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 more than a week ago with 2.61 million equivalent units shifted. While most of those units were actual purchases, streaming activity also played a significant role in propelling the album to historic heights.
Despite experiencing an 83% decline in total consumption this week, The Tortured Poets Department remains unrivaled. While such a drop would typically for any other project to relinquish the top spot on the chart, Swift’s album’s initial massive success ensures its continued reign.
It looks like that The Tortured Poets Department will secure a third consecutive week atop the Billboard 200. With few musicians capable of challenging her position, Swift may be poised to maintain her dominance on the chart for several more frames to come.
