HBO announces release date, teaser for Gaga Chromatica Ball – The A.V. Club

Beyoncé’s Renaissance and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert films continue to impact the culture in beautiful, unexpected ways. While not explicitly a result of the success of those two movies, HBO has nevertheless finally announced a release date for Gaga Chromatica Ball, the Lady Gaga concert special that was filmed nearly two years ago in front of 52,000 fans at Los Angeles’ Dodgers Stadium. The special will premiere May 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
The streamer also dropped a short teaser, in which Gaga’s enthusiasm and creativity are on full display. The artist wears at least 10 different costumes just in this brief clip, and dances and sings against huge sets and immersive staging. “Lady Gaga is a complete powerhouse,” Nina Rosenstein, HBO’s executive VP of programming, said in a statement. “She’s a once-in-a-lifetime artist who never holds back, and Gaga Chromatica Ball puts her endless list of talents on full display. We’re thrilled to partner with her once again for this breathtaking concert special.” The artist previously released Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden with the network in 2011.
While two years is a long time to wait, it’s actually completely on brand for this particular album. Gaga wasn’t able to tour for Chromatica—which was released in the summer of 2020—until two years later, for obviously reasons. At this point, what’s two years more? Who knows—maybe the Chromatica Oreos will make a comeback. If that album, which includes songs like “911,” “Stupid Love,” and “Rain On Me (with Ariana Grande)” wasn’t your cup of tea, don’t worry: she also plays the hits. You can even hear her introducing “Born This Way” at the end of the teaser.

If even that isn’t terribly exciting, Gaga Chromatica Ball won’t be your only chance to see Gaga on a screen this year. Joker: Folie á Deux, the DC jukebox musical in which the artist stars opposite Joaquin Phoenix, premieres October 4.
