Taylor Swift tries to shake off unauthorized websites.
Taylor Swift’s intellectual property entity, TAS Rights Management, LLC, has filed two cybersquatting cases to take control of domain names it says are infringing on its intellectual property rights.
All of the domain names include keywords that suggest the domains could be used to sell unauthorized merchandise.
In one case that was recently decided (pdf) by the World Intellectual Property Organization, the panel ordered the domain name taylorswift-merch .shop to be transferred to Swift’s holding company.
A Pakistan man registered the domain name and previously used it to mirror the official TaylorSwift.com site. It no longer resolves to a website.
The other case has not been decided yet and covers three domain names: taylormerch .com, taylorswiftmerchshop .com, and taylorswiftsmerch .com.
None of these domain names currently resolve to websites, but they previously hosted a website selling jewelry.
This is the first time one of Taylor Swift’s entities has used the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy to pursue domain names. However, they have previously registered domain names defensively, including some strange ones.
