Taylor Swift is steady at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week yet again. Her new album The Tortured Poets Departmentis a non-mover atop the list of the most-consumed full-lengths in the country, and as has been the case for the past several frames, another turn on the throne helps the singer-songwriter make history.
The Tortured Poets Department has now ruled the Billboard 200 for 11 weeks. It’s the superstar’s third title to rack up at least 11 frames on top of the competitive roster, which is an extremely rare showing for any musical act in the U.S.
Swift’s first album to earn 11 stays on top of the Billboard 200 was Fearless. Her sophomore set helped turn her from a rising talent into a certified hitmaker and one of the most exciting new voices in the music industry.
The Grammy winner then repeated that success years later with 1989. That project pushed her from the country sound that made her a household name into a pop powerhouse. It still ranks as Swift’s longest-charting effort ever on the Billboard 200.
According to Billboard, Swift is just the third name to see three different albums spend 11 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. She joins both Whitney Houston and The Beatles, who have managed the feat in very different ways.
The Beatles were the first act to earn three 11-week rulers. They actually have four titles in their discography that have sat atop the Billboard 200 for at least that many frames, with several holding on for much longer. That group of blockbuster projects includes Meet the Beatles! and Abbey Road (11 weeks), the A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack (14), and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (15).
Whitney Houston joined The Beatles decades after they enjoyed their moment in the sun. The singer’s self-titled album spent 14 weeks at No. 1 in 1986. The following year, she added to her growing list of bestsellers when Whitney dominated for 11 turns. The Bodyguard soundtrack then racked up an incredible 20 stays at No. 1 in the early ‘90s.
The Tortured Poets Department is seemingly headed for a twelfth week at No. 1 in a few days. If it can hold on, it will become Swift’s longest-running leader so far. How long it will continue to rule after that is unclear, but the bestseller and powerful streamer might continue to add to its historic total for months to come.
