Taylor Swift and ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn showed all the signs of being headed for the altar during their six-year romance but their ‘secret engagement’ sadly signalled the end of the couple
When Taylor Swift reportedly got engaged to Joe Alwyn back in 2022 the singer didn't realise at the time that the fate of her romance was already sealed.
Rumours of pending nuptials had been rife for months for the couple when it was reported in June 2022 that they had started planning their wedding after a 4000-mile journey from Nashville to St Ives for a romantic break had resulted in a proposal a few months earlier.
Reports at the time suggested that Taylor was planning a 'simple yet elegant wedding' and wasn't lured into the prospect of lucrative magazine or TV deals for their big day. A source close to Joe said: "Taylor and Joe are incredibly happy, and very, very in love, they’ve actually been engaged for a few months but have only told their inner-inner circle – basically immediate family, and trusted, very old friends."

They continued to The Sun at the time: "Everyone has been sworn to secrecy, too. Taylor has a beautiful ring but she only wears it when she’s at home – i.e behind closed doors. Again, only a handful of people know details about the wedding and Taylor hasn’t even told some of her team about the engagement."
However, fast forward to early 2023 and it appeared that things had gone terribly wrong for the once loved-up couple after six years together it was announced they had gone their separate ways. While speculation was rife over what had caused the breakdown of their romance one theory kept coming up – their conflicting ideas on a potential wedding had ended the relationship.
Then in April of this year as Taylor released her latest studio album The Tortured Poets Department she appeared to provide plenty of fuel for the fire of the fact that she had been engaged to Joe and that their wedding plans – or lack of – had caused chaos between them. Firstly, Taylor released the music video for the lead single – Fortnight, which features Post Malone.
In the opening scene of the black and white music video, which was set in a very clinical location of an asylum, Taylor can seen handcuffed to a bed while wearing a white wedding dress complete with a garter. While handcuffed to the bed, which was at an angle in an upside-down room, Taylor can be seen getting administered a "forget him" pill.
Then, on the album itself in her track So Long, London, which is track number five on TTPD, Taylor can be heard bidding a sad farewell to their relationship. Taylor croons: "I’m p—ed off you let me give you all that youth for free." She then shares the visions she had of the pair tying the knot, as she continues: "You swore that you loved me, but where were the clues? I died on the altar waiting for the proof."
Also in the track, Taylor appears to hit out at Joe for forcing her to leave the city she loves referring to London after she lived there with him for several years. She sings: "I’m just mad as hell ‘cause I loved this place."
This isn't the first time that Taylor has hinted at wanting to marry Joe in a song. In her Midnights track You're Losing Me, which was written in 2021 and released last spring, Taylor sings: "And I wouldn't marry me either / A pathological people pleaser / Who only wanted you to see her."
And in her 2019 title track Lover, from her album of the same name, Taylor seemingly hinted at marriage once again. "Ladies and gentlemen, will you please stand?" Taylor sings in the lovey-dovey hit, continuing to croon: "With every guitar string scar on my hand / I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover / My heart's been borrowed and yours has been blue / All's well that ends well to end up with you / Swear to be overdramatic and true to my lover."
