Taylor Swift’s new album The Tortured Poets Department rules the world this week. The set opens at No. 1 pretty much everywhere, and the lead single from the project, “Fortnight,” has become an immediate worldwide win.
“Fortnight” debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, the weekly ranking of the most-consumed songs all around the planet. As she scores another champion, Swift breaks out of a tie with several other superstars…and she inches closer to the most successful group in the world at the moment.
Swift earns her fifth No. 1 smash on the Billboard Global 200 this week as “Fortnight” opens atop the tally. That’s the most among solo artists in the ranking’s history, which only traces back a few years.
Before “Fortnight” arrived, Swift was tied with two other beloved musicians for the most winners on the Billboard Global 200 among solo acts. Bad Bunny and Ariana Grande have both collected four rulers, which is now enough for them to sit in second place on this specific tally.
Only one other name has accrued more No. 1s in the history of the Billboard Global 200. BTS have thus far nabbed seven leaders. They haven’t added to that sum for a while, so that means they’ve held this record for quite some time now–and also that they were able to earn more champions than anyone else in rapid fashion.
Swift is catching up to BTS in terms of the number of No. 1s she’s collected on the Billboard Global 200, but she hasn’t caught them yet. She might be able to do so relatively soon, as the South Korean boy band is on a break. The seven members are all fulfilling their mandatory military enlistment, and they’re not expected to reunite and release new music until perhaps sometime in 2025.
At the rate that Swift is releasing new music–both when it comes to albums of original material and re-recorded projects–she could hit No. 1 twice more in the next several months or year. The singer hasn’t announced her next step, but she has two titles left to re-record, and either of them–or perhaps both–could produce new Billboard Global 200 winners.
