She’s leaving subtle clues. Taylor Swift may have alluded to Joe Alwyn in her Tortured Poets Department release cycle. Fans noticed that songs in her 5 Stages of Grief playlists on Apple Music have tons of hints about her previous relationship with the actor.
Accompanying the playlists that portray denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, the “Lover” singer made some remarks about how she chose the songs. “This is a list of songs about getting so caught up in the idea of something that you have a hard time seeing the red flags, possibly resulting in moments of denial [and] delusion,” she explained of the denial tracks. “Results may vary.”
“These songs represent making room for more good in your life,” she says in a brief audio message accompanying the final playlist, acceptance. “Making that choice. Because a lot of time when we lose things, we gain things too.”
It’s highly speculated that Taylor Swift’s new album is about her ex Joe Alwyn. The pair dated from 2016 to 2023 and kept their relationship super private. “I was falling in love with someone who had a wonderfully normal, balanced life,” Swift said in her 2020 documentary, Miss Americana. “We decided together we wanted our relationship to be private. I was happy. But I wasn’t happy in the way I was trained to be happy. It was happiness without anyone else’s input. We were just happy.”
However, a resurfaced interview shows that the musician felt quite the opposite about hiding her relationships. “To me, it all depends on who you’re with. If they have a serious issue with it then you, I guess, hide or whatever but I don’t really like that,” she quipped on The Chatty Man in 2012. “Because it makes me feel like I’m running from the law or something. I don’t want to feel like I’m a fugitive, like, ‘Oh my God, we’re having a relationship! Better put on a mask and stuff!’”
Recently, Taylor Swift has been spotted out and about with her new boyfriend Travis Kelce. The couple was at Coachella on the weekend of April 12, 2024 at Jack Antonoff’s band Bleacher’s set. “I don’t get enough of it in my life, I really enjoy any event. I just like going to events, going places where people are seeing talents… all these talented people in the world,” the Kansas City Chiefs players said on his podcast New Heights.
