Joker: Folie à Deux
The first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux dropped Tuesday night. The film is a sequel to 2019’s controversial masterpiece, and looks like a properly dark and bizarre follow-up to the story of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix).
This time around we also have Lady Gaga starring as Harley Quinn. And the trailer plays like some twisted love story. “What the world needs now is love sweet love…”
The two meet up in Arkham Asylum. Harley Quinn puts her fingers to her head and pulls the trigger, in a bit of an homage to the last film’s gripping final sequence. The two quickly hit it off, it seems, and then hit the road.
“I’ll tell you what’s changed,” Fleck says in the trailer. “I’m not alone anymore.”
Folie à Deux refers to a rare psychiatric disorder also called shared psychosis or shared delusional disorder (SDD) where symptoms of some type of delusional belief are passed on from one person to the next. It seems clear from the title that Fleck and Quinn will share their unique delusions with one another, though in many Harley Quinn origin stories it’s the Joker who brings out Quinn’s crazy.
Here’s the trailer:
The film is being directed by Todd Phillips, who also directed the original film. And while that was meant to be a standalone movie, the opportunity for a sequel with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn was just too juicy.
Only Phoenix’s Joker has come close to the brilliance of Heath Ledger’s maniacal villain, and if I’m being honest I like them about equally but they’re completely different takes on a classic comic book badguy. A part of me also hopes this turns into a trilogy, with the Joker and Batman going toe-to-toe, though not necessarily in an action-packed movie like most Batman films. Maybe a psychological thriller.
Joker: Folie à Deux arrives on October 4th, 2024 just in time for Halloween. What do you think of the trailer? Let me know on Twitter and Facebook.
