Lady Gaga has gone on the record in an interview with Oprah Winfrey to admit that she and Bradley Cooper wanted the public to believe they were dating when they were promoting A Star Is Born.
“Quite frankly, I think the press is very silly,” Gaga told Winfrey in her cover interview for ELLE U.S.’ December issue.
“I mean, we made a love story. For me, as a performer and as an actress, of course we wanted people to believe that we were in love. And we wanted people to feel that love at the Oscars.
“We wanted it to go right through the lens of that camera and to every television that it was being watched on. And we worked hard on it, we worked for days. We mapped the whole thing out—it was orchestrated as a performance.”
Suffice to say—mission accomplished—a sentiment Winfrey confirmed, addeding: “You were orchestrating it as a performance to evoke exactly what it did.”
“It did,” Gaga admitted. “In truth, when we talked about it, we went, ‘Well, I guess we did a good job!’”
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper at the 91st Annual Academy Awards in 2019.
While rumours of a romance were just that—rumours—the pair’s on-screen chemistry definitely translated off-screen, with fans watching their every adorable co-star moment, culminating in that Oscars duet of “Shallow”.
Although Cooper has yet to comment on Gaga’s statement, he has always spoken well of his co-star in the past.
“She knows everything about me—everything. There is not one thing she doesn’t know, and I believe the same for me,” he told EW in August 2018.
Cooper took his comments one step further in an interview with Time magazine in September 2018, where he dropped the L-word in relation to Gaga.
“I love her so deeply,” he said. “It’s because we were at our most vulnerable together.”
Well, they definitely could have (and did) fool us!
