Lady Gaga is already a Grammy favorite with 13 wins and 36 nominations throughout her career, and now she may be preparing to break with tradition by submitting her track “Bloody Mary” for consideration at the upcoming Grammy Awards.
While 2022 and 2023 have been relatively quiet for the superstar as she focuses on her businesses and upcoming movie, she has a song that appears to be eligible and worthy of consideration. With such a limited number of tracks that can even be submitted, Gaga likely won’t want to miss this opportunity to potentially win some more gold.
The buzz around “Bloody Mary” began when a viral clip from the Netflix NFLX show Wednesday gained traction on TikTok, featuring Gaga’s song as the soundtrack. The tune quickly gained popularity, prompting Gaga and her team to release it as a proper single. Remarkably, “Bloody Mary” had originally been released as an album cut on Gaga’s Born This Way album a decade prior, but at the time, it didn’t attract the same level of attention.
Following its release as a single, “Bloody Mary” climbed to No. 41 on the Hot 100 chart and became a smash hit on pop radio. Its release in December 2022 appears to make it eligible for Grammy consideration, and its unlikely success adds to its compelling story. Now, Gaga faces the decision of whether to submit the song for one category or another, or if she wants to do so at all.
Gaga has several categories to consider for “Bloody Mary.” One possibility is submitting it for Best Pop Solo Performance, a category she has been nominated for three times before, winning in 2019 for “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?).” The track could also compete in the newly-announced Best Pop Dance Recording category, as it carries a distinct dance and electronic vibe.
Submitting an older recording for Grammy consideration is uncommon, but “Bloody Mary” may have a chance based on its surprising boom in popularity and performance. Additionally, it was released as a single for the first time in 2022, which may make it fitting for consideration by the Recording Academy. Now, the question remains whether voters will be inclined to reward something that is relatively old in the fast-paced world of music, or if they will prefer to honor only the latest releases. The nominations for the 2024 Grammys are expected to be announced later this year, revealing whether “Bloody Mary” has secured a spot among the nominees.
