Ed Kelce knew he was in trouble when he couldn’t recognize Taylor Swift.
Kelce, the father of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce — Swift’s boyfriend — and Eagles center Jason Kelce, was at Travis’ home with other friends in town for a regular-season game, just like any other weekend, but this time, Swift was there.
Sometimes, Kelce told Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, he won’t recognize Travis’ friends.
Maybe he’s met them before but just doesn’t recognize them.
Maybe they’ve never met at all.
But when Swift walked into the house with a security person, Kelce turned to his girlfriend and said, “‘Oh my god, I know this kid, but I don’t know what her name is.’
“Jeez, you know, like a real idiot. And [my girlfriend] says, ‘You don’t know her? This is Taylor Swift, you idiot.’”
When the Kelce brothers met in Super Bowl LVII, Ed and Donna, his ex-wife, gathered increased attention with their travel schedule for the pair of postseason runs, but that spotlight has only expanded after Travis’ relationship with Swift became public in October — when she attended her first Chiefs game in Chicago.
The pair overlapped in a suit for the Chiefs-Broncos game in October, with the broadcast showing the pair conversing, and Ed told People in an interview that he noticed Swift didn’t get the “diva memo” or act like a “spoiled musician.”
“We’re sitting in the suite, she gets up and in the front room, she gets up to go get a drink or something and she starts picking up empty bottles, cans, plates that are scattered around,” he told the outlet. “Because in the suites everybody gets stuff and you empty it down wherever you can. … She doesn’t know how to pull that [spoiled musician] off. And that really to me said a whole lot.”
Now, Kelce said in his radio interview, he’ll get recognized at the grocery store, with random people who he doesn’t know saying hello and recognizing him from Travis’ relationship with Swift.
But his opinion of the singer hasn’t changed, while Swift continued to attend the Chiefs’ regular-season games as well as their pair of postseason matchups — including Sunday’s game at Highmark Stadium, when Jason’s shirtless, beer-chugging antics kept getting broadcast time, too.
“I don’t know that Taylor is out there trying to make money, trying to build this huge empire,’” Ed said during his radio appearance. “I think she’s out there following her passion, doing what she knows and what she enjoys, and people are just throwing money at her, you know what I mean.”
The Chiefs and the Ravens will meet Sunday in Baltimore for the AFC Championship game.
And if Kelce and Swift overlap again, this time, he’ll recognize his youngest son’s girlfriend.
